Truck hits parade crowd, injuring 28 in New Orleans

Throngs of people had come out for the Mardi Gras parade in New Orleans, lining the streets, when a suspected drunk driver slammed into the crowd. His truck mowed down almost 30 people. Police said that 28 total were injured, though seven of them reportedly said they didn't need treatment, leaving 21 to be taken to local medical centers.

Some of the victims were young children, according to police reports, with some around three or four years old.

The driver was called "highly intoxicated" by police. Witnesses said he seemed like he was "out of it" and perhaps not even sure of the scope of what had just happened. Some reports claimed he was yelling as the police took him away.

The local Police Chief said that the driver in the truck was heading in the opposite direction, against the parade traffic, and hit a pair of vehicles. After that collision, the 25-year-old man veered away from the parade, where his truck plowed into the crowd and eventually stopped. The smaller truck hit a dump truck at the end of the run, and some people were pinned under the vehicles.

Police are still investigating the incident, but the driver has been arrested. Pictures from the scene showed him on the ground with an officer pinning him down.

An accident like this can leave many people with high medical bills, lost wages, and serious injuries that can alter the course of their lives. When facing costs like this in the wake of a traumatic accident, it's important for people to know if they have a right to compensation.
