10 reasons parents don't pay proper support

You have custody of the kids. Your ex was ordered to pay child support. For the first few years, it was fine.

Then the support stopped coming. Not only do you want to know what legal steps you can take, but you're just wondering why your ex would do this in the first place. Below are 10 reasons this happens, some of which may apply.

1. The person who was ordered to pay lost a job and has no income.

2. The person doesn't think he or she can offer proper support, no matter what the court said.

3. He or she does not actually believe you need that money.

4. He or she thinks you are spending the money on yourself, not the kids.

5. The other parent thinks that the whole court system is unfair.

6. Your ex has fallen so far behind in payments that the full debt feels impossible to pay off.

7. Your ex has other kids and a second family to support.

8. The other parent is employed, but it's just a part-time job and doesn't provide much money.

9. Your ex wants more parenting time and thinks that withholding payments will force you to comply.

10. Your ex just thinks it's fine not to pay and doesn't believe in the consequences.

No matter what reason is given, breaking a court order and refusing to pay child support is illegal. Be sure that you really know about all of the options that you have and how to proceed. Even if your ex doesn't believe in the consequences, they absolutely do exist.
