Louisiana man killed by driver backing out of driveway

A Meraux, Louisiana, man was killed over Labor Day weekend when his motorcycle hit the back of a Nissan Titan truck. The 31-year-old man was pronounced dead at the scene on LA 23 in Belle Chasse.

According to Louisiana State Police, the crash occurred as a 68-year-old woman was backing her truck out of a driveway. The motorcyclist, who was reportedly driving fast, struck the truck. He was ejected from the bike.

According to the State Police, the driver of the truck was found to have more than the legal limit of alcohol in her system when she was given a breathalyzer test. She was arrested on multiple charges, including DWI, vehicular homicide and improper backing, and taken to Plaquemines Parish Jail.

Obviously, anyone who is driving while under the influence of alcohol or drugs is a danger to those on the road. However, getting behind the wheel of a vehicle, even if you don't make it onto the road, can have deadly consequences. As the State Police noted, "By never allowing an impaired driver to get behind the wheel and reporting dangerous drivers to law enforcement, the public can play an important role in the reduction of crashes caused by impaired drivers."

Motorcyclists are particularly vulnerable to reckless and negligent drivers. Even those fortunate enough to survive a motorcycle/motor vehicle crash may face a lifetime of medical treatment, therapy and perhaps disability. That's why it's essential to explore your legal options for seeking compensation from the at-fault driver to help cover the costs of dealing with life after a serious injury.
