Chalmette pharmacy caught up in federal drug investigation

Law enforcement agencies at all levels are increasingly cracking down on doctors and pharmacists who abuse their authority by providing potentially-lethal amounts of drugs -- particularly opioids -- to patients. A pharmacy here in Chalmette has been the target of a Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) investigation.

In April of this year, the DEA raided Wilkinson Family Pharmacy. The pharmacy reportedly has one of the highest rates of opioid prescriptions in Louisiana.

The DEA investigation stemmed from reports back in 2015 that a woman was getting multiple prescriptions filled at the pharmacy that were issued by a doctor in Metairie to someone by another name. The woman whose identification was used said that she had lost it.

The doctor has said that the prescriptions under his name are forged. His office manager has confessed to forging the prescriptions. She's been accused of providing prescriptions in seven people's names between 2015 and 2016 using prescription forms she stole from the doctor whose name she forged. The prescriptions were reportedly for drugs including Percocet and Oxycontin.

So far, neither of the pharmacy's two pharmacists have been charged. However, the business has surrendered its operating permit and license following a raid by DEA agents. Further, the feds have seized approximately $1 million from it.

While it hasn't been confirmed, it's believed that both the office manager and the woman who filled the prescriptions are cooperating with the investigation in exchange for plea deals.

Authorities take the illegal dispensing or other sale of prescription painkillers that are known to be addictive very seriously. If you are under investigation for such a crime or have been charged, an experienced Louisiana criminal defense attorney can provide help and guidance.
